Ina Sutfin Obituary

INA MAE SUTFIN – SEPTEMBER 9, 1945 – MAY 16, 2021

Ina Mae Sutfin, age 75, of Freeville, NY formerly of Lansing, NY passed away Sunday, May 16, 2021 at Guthrie Cortland Medical Center surrounded by her family, after a period of declining health.

Born September 9, 1945 in Endicott, NY daughter of the late Merill C. Groats and Fannie S. Robinson Groats.  Ina worked at the A & P Grocery Store, Jamesway and Kmart Department stores, and was Clerk of the Court for Lansing Town Court for a number of years under the judgeships of Floyd Ferris and Frederick Spry, before embarking in her career with the Tompkins County Health Department in the W.I.C. Program.  Ina retired from the Health Department in 1996 and along with her husband, Ken decided to open a ceramics and crafts business together.  It kept them busy for a few years, and you could find many of their creations in gardens and households.

Ina was a wonderful and caring person who was a magnificent seamstress.  She made many outfits for her growing family and was able to alter just about anything.  Ina was also known for her beautiful cake decorating skills, and she made many celebration cakes including for weddings, graduations, and special occasions.  She enjoyed reading immensely and had acquired quite the library.  Ina also enjoyed family vacations to the seaside as well as camping throughout the Eastern U.S. and Eastern Canada.   Ina was the family historian, creating a multitude of binders of genealogy, meticulously tracing the family’s roots all the way back to the Netherlands, Great Britain, and mainland Europe through to the 1500’s.  In her later years, she enjoyed watching many different television series with the various streaming services she subscribed to and was an avid Nascar racing fan.   When Covid hit in 2020, she began a new hobby of coloring with colored pencils in intricate coloring books and favored many with some of her creations of beautifully colored and detailed scenes.  She will be greatly missed, leaving a legacy of true and genuine love.

Ina is survived by her stepdaughter Wendy (John) Davis of Endicott, NY; daughter, Bonnie (Don) Scutt of Freeville, NY; son Kenneth (Andrea) Sutfin, Jr. of Spencer, NY; grandchildren, Chris, Kim, Justin, Chloe (Chuck), Alex (Sarah), David, Ashton and Trevar; and great-grandchildren Jacy, Colby, and Alyvia.  In addition to her parents, she was predeceased in 2016 by her loving husband of 53 years, Kenneth Paul Sutfin Sr. who she missed every single day.

Graveside services will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, May 22, 2021 at Maple Grove Cemetery, Candor, NY.  A memorial luncheon will follow at the Spencer Fire Hall.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Dryden Little League, PO Box 427, Dryden, NY 13053.
