Matthew Alan (Matt) Prentice

Matthew Alan “Matt” Prentice, 39, of Ithaca, passed away suddenly at home on February 12, 2024.

Matt was born in Harris Township, New York to John R. Prentice Sr. and Karen L. Northup on April 6, 1984. He attended Marathon and Candor Central Schools and went on to earn a living working in a variety of trades, including construction, building maintenance, and roofing.  He became quite a proficient auto mechanic, working most recently for Maguire Resale in Ithaca.  

Matt enjoyed hunting and fishing and was always eager to learn new things hands-on, like his black-smithing.  He was proud of his garden and his flock of chickens and quail.   He was at his fun-loving best when surrounded by family and friends, apple picking, sitting around the campfire, hitting the Mother Lode of diamonds at Herkimer, or serving up his famous spaghetti salad at family get-togethers. 

Matt is survived by his beloved daughter Alyssa Prentice & her mother Rebecca Lott of Groton, NY, brothers John (Melissa) Prentice of Romulus, NY and Scott Craig of Candor, NY, his mother Karen Northup and stepfather Michael Predmore of Candor, NY, favorite nieces and nephew Kylee Lott, Annabeth Craig and Finley Prentice, and Grandpa Jay Northup Jr. of Virgil, NY, as well as numerous Northup and Prentice family Aunts, Uncles and Cousins.  He is preceded in death by his father John Prentice Sr.

A time of visitation and remembering Matthew will be held at Perkins Funeral Home, 55 West Main Street, Dryden, for family and friends on March 16, from 2-4 pm.  Burial will take place at a future date.

Matthew loved easily and cared for those he loved wholeheartedly.  It was always fun to be where he was.   His mischievous grin and throaty chuckle will not be forgotten.
